Brie Larson has repeatedly gone on record showing her support for the idea of an all-female Avengers movie, and having just seen Avengers: Endgame in cinemas, the Captain Marvel star seems more committed than ever to the suggestion.
In an interview with CNET, the actress was asked who she’d like to team up with in the MCU. In response, Larson proposed something more ambitious than your standard buddy movie:
“I’m still really into this idea of an all-female ‘Avengers’ movie. Getting all the women together and getting them to work as a team… would be so powerful and iconic.”
The Oscar-winner went on to argue that Endgame demonstrates how inspiring it can be to see all these characters working together and bringing their own unique skills to the table:
“Just because having just seen Avengers: Endgame, getting to see all of those characters on screen, you realize the beauty of these new superhero movies is that everybody has their own special skills they bring to the table. Their own, you know, superpower. And to see women work together, and in that way as a team, is not something we’ve seen enough of on screen.”
When asked what advice she’d give to anyone hoping to fight for a cause, the actress offered further insight on what the Marvel movies mean to her:
“The main thing is finding out the thing that only you can do. And you might be surprised to discover what that is. Telling stories, making movies that reflect my value system, that put people in the shoes of others, that are able to bridge empathy and show you what the world looks like, has been really profound for me, and in some ways, much more impactful than any words I could ever possibly say, or any street corner that I could shout on. But everybody has their own unique thing.”
Larson is far from the only MCU star to throw her support behind the idea of an all-female Marvel movie, with Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Scarlett Johansson and Tessa Thompson all expressing an interest in the past. As recently as last month, Thompson reaffirmed her enthusiasm in an interview with CinemaBlend, explaining, “there’s so many incredible, talented women in the MCU that I just want to work with selfishly.”
So far, the closest that audiences have come to seeing this idea being realized is the all-female team-up sequence in the final third of Avengers: Endgame. Still, with Marvel Studios staying tight-lipped on future plans, there’s really no telling if Larson’s suggestion is just a few years away from becoming a reality. In the meantime, the next female-led film on the schedule is the Black Widow solo movie, which is expected to kick off Phase 4 when it comes out next year.
